All That Glitters: Caring for Gold Jewelry

Gold has long been one of the most treasured precious metals in jewelry design. Valued for its durability, gold jewelry can last a lifetime – or even longer – if cared for properly. However, like all precious metals, gold can still be damaged if mistreated or handled roughly. Here are a few tips that can help you ensure your gold jewelry stays pristine for years to come.

Gold jewelry should be the last thing you put on when getting ready and the first thing to take off when undressing. Putting gold on last prevents exposure to chemicals in perfume/cologne, hairspray, and cosmetics. Taking it off first ensures that prongs or clasps don’t get caught and bent in clothing. Additionally, gold jewelry should not be worn in any situation where chemicals, such as cleaning products or crafting supplies, could damage the piece. Rings and bracelets should be removed before any rough or strenuous activity to avoid scratches and dents.

Part of keeping your gold jewelry in tip-top shape is suitable storage in a safe and secure place, like a jewelry box. Gold jewelry should also be kept in a dry, cool environment, preferably in a soft cloth pouch or in the original box. This prevents the piece from being scratched by or entangled with other jewelry pieces.

While gold does not tarnish as easily as sterling silver, it can become dull and darken slightly over time. To clean your gold jewelry, soak the piece in a solution of mild dish detergent and lukewarm water. If certain areas need extra work to regain their shine, you can use a soft toothbrush to gently work away built on grime. Make certain that the bristles are soft – using a stiff bristled brush can scratch and damage gold’s surface. Once clean and rinsed, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth and polish with a jewelry cloth. It’s also a good idea to take your gold jewelry into a jeweler every once in a while to have them buff and steam clean the piece, as well as check it for loose stones or chain links.

With gentle care and regular cleaning, you can rest assured that your gold jewelry continues to glitter and shine like it did when you first received it.

    1. Hi Donna! We do offer a retired Police Department ring in women’s sizes: http://www.shineon.com/products/retired-pd-ring. However, if that’s not the design you’re looking for, I’d be more than happy to share your suggestion with our jewelry designers for future inspiration. If there’s anything else I can help with, please let me know!

      Best,
      Meredith
